I am very blessed with a son, who is only one, that is quite...
Sit, take a moment to ponder this. What does it mean, live your life? Are you not doing that? You go through your daily routine dropping off your kids at school, catching up on emails whether at your desk or in line at the bank, checking off one task after another from your never ending to-do list. It’s so easy with one click our smartphones go to work and we can constantly busy ourselves with menial tasks. Smartphones were meant to simplify life, everything you could dream of in the palm of your hand. Yet these devices have seemed to have shifted our lives into overdrive. A fast paced race down the highway to the grave. You’re living, right? You’re comfortable, planing for the future, and waiting for retirement to come around to truly be free to live your life the way that you want it.
Wait a moment! From the way it sounds life is merrily passing you by until one day, you can cash in your cards and reap the benefits of your winnings. You have raised a family, held a successful career albeit the many hours you have spent toiling away at someone’s ideal of success, for what? You are 65 and only now fully engaged in fulfilling your wants and desires.
Why wait? Do you feel fulfilled now? This very minute, do you feel like you are living out your life’s purpose, making the most of this oh, so special gift? We get so absorbed in barely getting by and forget to dream. Our childhood wonder fades like fog being burnt away by the immense rays of golden light as the summer sun rises over the horizon. Life becomes a loveless affair, drudgery until one day, the kids are grown up, moved away and you are left with the remnants of your own individual aspirations.
It may seem like I am scrutinizing this behavior, but I am not. For many staying inside the bounds of comfort is quintessential to their happiness and I get that. But what if you wanted more? Instead of an old beat up, second or third hand Mercury Cougar you wanted to buy a brand new Toyota Prius, or maybe you never got the education you so desired. Maybe you followed the wishes of your parents to become a doctor or a lawyer when all you wanted to do was be a social worker. Do you want to visit Southeast Asia to teach English to under privileged school children or maybe you want to climb Machu Picchu. Whatever your dreams may be, are you taking steps toward achieving them or have you so brashly tucked them off in the crevices of your mind like books set atop the highest shelves in the remote corners of the library collecting dust, never again seeing the light of day?
Live Your Life is a program focused on becoming aware of your current situation, those things that work for you, support you and add joy to your life, and identifying those things in which you would like to change. Having experienced a total upheaval in my own life moving abroad without any certainty that my gamble would pay off has provided me a wealth of knowledge. I wanted to seek out a life that was more fulfilling through culture, experience, and being in an environment that pushed me to grow. Facing fear and uncertainty can be extremely scary, but anything in this life worth having or achieving is worth the temporary discomfort. Honestly there are no guarantees in life, so why search for them, but rather ride the wave and look. Open yourself up to the amazing opportunities that await you. I want to encourage and motivate my clients to live up to their highest potential. There is no reason you should look back twenty years from now saying, I should have, could have but I didn’t. The time is now to say I should, I can, and I will.
